I’ve come to realise over the past 7 years of doing my business coaching work, that so much of what drives us and the choices we make in our life are driven through identity – and this especially applies when it comes to our work/business path.
The thing where we spend so many hours of our day, gives us that sense of fulfilment and also contribution. Shaping our sense of value and worth in the world.
My work has thus evolved therefore to be deeply connected to the discovery and reconnection to true identity, listening inward, because of that.
This week the subject of an open G Centre came up during a post-reading catch up with a client who has been navigating anchoring his sense of direction within his business.
I have been fascinated with the G Center ever since my early days of discovering Human Design – almost 4 years ago. It governs our energy associated with our sense of identity, direction, love.
Understanding the G centre in context of the bodygraph
The G centre is mostly closely connected to what may be familiar as the Heart Chakra in the Indian Chakra system.
Though trying to strictly map the Human Design Centres this way can be sometimes confusing because there is also one centre within the Human Design actually called the “Heart/Ego/Will” Centre, which governs self worth, motivation, willpower.
The bodygraph that we are familiar with in Human Design is a layered view with roots in both the traditional Chakra system, but also a lesser known system originating from the Kabbalistic Tree of Life (known as Sephiroth). The Sephiroth framework of energy centres (Tree of Life) are said to represent the creation story, and pathway of humanity’s return to spirit. Which I find absolutely beautiful.
But having said so, the Human Design 9 Centre view is a completely standalone system on its own, evolved based on aspects these two systems and we can draw some alignment – but we still want to see them each as individual separate systems serving different purposes rather than try to force a match.
The G centre is special because it guides what feels like almost an inner compass that continues to push away or propel you in certain directions.
It is probably my favourite centre in the entire body graph.
But what if this is undefined/open?
When you have an open/undefined G-centre (or any open/undefined centre) – it generally is associated with a more right-facing energy – receptive, open, amplifier of energy around you (vs. defined – left facing energy, you generate your own energy from within and have consistency in both putting this out through expression, but also in processing experience).
When particularly your G-centre is open – it means is that you have the ability to choose who shapes and shifts your sense of identity (environment and surroundings is therefore extremely important).
As long as you are aware of the openness – you have that ability and openness to shape, morph and choose the tribe and energy to surround yourself with (rather than this happening to you unconsciously).
Life will always begin through a sampling of different energies (even for those that have it defined, though the experience of this will be different), and with an open/undefined centre you may likely find that you can easily adapt yourself to very different groups which bring out different parts of you.
What I notice a lot with those surrounding me that have undefined G-centres is that they will tend to have varied groups or circles of friends – where sometimes I cannot always understand how they can be so connected within those circles (that feel so different and bring out such a different core energy in them to what I experience with them), and still know that they are being fully themselves, but in different ways.
Those with a defined G-center (such as myself), will tend to attract as well as be drawn to the tribe and core energy already similar to themselves. That core energy is consistent. It is a natural mutual magnetic pull that happens due to the consistent wavelength and energy they put out.
It does not mean that those with a defined G-centre are less open to growth and expansion here beyond their fixed energy, but it is simply an evolution upon that core energy, as well as a natural shedding of surrounding energy that happens, when people around us bring energy feels misaligned.
It is important to understand that conditioning associated with this centre (and in knowing that with an open centre you are extremely sensitive) will often throw up questions such as
- What do people love about me?
- Do they love me?
- Who am I really?
- Where should I live?
- What is my direction, my purpose?
My experience as someone with a defined G-centre is that these questions then become
- Why don’t I feel loved as the true me, how can I find it?
- What does rejection mean about my lovability?
- I know who I am, but feeling trapped, how do I break out?
- How do I move away from what I know is not my direction and purpose?
For those with an undefined/open G-Centre – it is not natural to pursue or try to force a fixed identity to settle on
Or to cave into the pressures to to “know who you are” – at least not until you are ready.
There is a huge amount of wisdom and capacity for growth associated with open centers – as there is no pre-definition. No pre-existing viewpoint. No personal fixed nature. You can see it almost as being this pure energy of innocence, which is here to be curious and learn in the world.
There is in this way also a lot of naivety associated with open centres in early years of life, but then this evolves into deeper awareness and wisdom (with a lot more capacity than defined centres) as you get older, have more life experience, and learn to trust yourself.
And I have come across theories when it comes to Human Design associated with our reincarnation cycles that open centres represent those where there is no longer any karmic energy being carried from past lives to process. There is pureness, entering this world to create new karma.
It may be why you may meet those that have many open centres – such as reflectors for example – that have no defined centres at all (and if they are connected with themselves and aligned) as feeling like they are old souls.
I caveat that with saying – because of its openness, it is extremely susceptible to conditioning – which is why this awareness is so important, and feeling out always the energy around you.
The trick is to lean into your unique Human Design strategy & authority in asking yourself:
Do I respond to this? Do I enjoy their energy? Does it feel aligned to be defined/conditioned by this energy? And the awareness of it to be so important.
🟨 UNDEFINED or OPEN G CENTRE
- Nature: Flexible, empathic, environmentally influenced
- Potential Wisdom: Fluid understanding of identity, deep recognition of love and direction in others, chameleon-like adaptability
Conditioning Themes:
- Pressure to “find” or “solidify” a fixed identity
- Tendency to take on the identities or desires of others
- Struggle with inconsistency in love or direction
- Seeking environments or people that “define” them
Typical Questions (especially when conditioned):
- Who am I really?
- What do people love about me?
- Do they love me, or just the version of me I show?
- Am I in the right place/environment?
- What is my direction or purpose?
- How do I find the “right” version of myself?
Conditioned Feelings:
- Lost
- Insecure in relationships
- Dependent on external validation
- Unstable sense of self
- Fear of being unlovable or overlooked
When Deconditioned / In Alignment:
- Deep wisdom about identity being fluid, not fixed
- Clarity that love and direction emerge in the right environment
- Comfort with not needing to “know” who they are all the time
- Sensitivity to others’ identities without taking them on
🟧 DEFINED G CENTRE
- Nature: Consistent sense of self, fixed identity and direction
- Potential Strength: Steady internal compass, radiates authentic presence, inspires others with clarity of self
Conditioning Themes:
- Feeling forced to change or mask identity for acceptance
- Being told they’re “too much” or “not enough” as they are
- Misalignment when staying too long in the wrong environment or relationship
- Struggle when others don’t reflect back their authentic self
Typical Questions (especially when conditioned):
- Why don’t people love me for who I truly am?
- What does this rejection mean about my lovability?
- I know who I am, so why do I feel so misaligned?
- How do I escape what isn’t aligned with me?
- Why am I stuck when I know what I want?
- How can I be seen and valued as me?
Conditioned Feelings:
- Rejected or unloved for their true self
- Stuck or trapped in misaligned direction
- Frustrated that others don’t “get” them
- Isolated despite having clarity
When Deconditioned / In Alignment:
- Radiates a strong, unwavering sense of self
- Attracts aligned people and opportunities
- Leads others with authenticity
- Naturally knows when something is off or misaligned
- Moves through life with inner direction and love
SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON
| Aspect | Undefined/Open G | Defined G |
| Identity | Fluid, shaped by environment | Consistent, stable |
| Love | Unsure if they are loved for who they are | Seeks love for true self |
| Direction | Must find the right place to feel aligned | Has internal compass, may feel stuck in wrong place |
| Conditioning Triggers | Needing to “be someone”, fear of being no one | Feeling unseen or unloved as they are |
| Deconditioning Path | Embrace fluidity, choose environment wisely | Honor true self, exit misaligned spaces |
| Gift | Empathy, adaptability, wisdom of identity | Stability, leadership through authenticity |
That’s it for this one.
